The Karen Peace Support Network released a report expressing concerns regarding Thailand’s humanitarian aid initiative in Karen State in March. The report highlighted several shortcomings, notably the failure to effectively reach the most urgent needs of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in conflict-affected areas. Despite the distribution of relief items, such as a mere 5 kg of rice which only lasts two days, it fell significantly short of meeting the IDPs' needs. Moreover, KPSN raised alarm over the involvement of the junta affiliated Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) in leading roles during aid delivery, with soldiers present, causing intimidation and trauma among the IDPs. The initiative lacked proper consultation and collaboration with key stakeholders such as the Karen National Union (KNU) and community-based aid networks, thereby limiting its effectiveness. KPSN calls for a direct channeling of aid to IDPs in Karen State through local border-based organizations, without any involvement of the junta. Read the report here: https://bit.ly/44lTjyb
